Trying to work out if our direct train is the older E300 or new E320. Google search suggests if its an 18 carriage train, which it is, then its an E300. This would really annoy me as the direct train is si much more expensive. I'd expect the newer trains on this service. Anyone done the direct? Can you comment on leg room, sockets etc?

When we last went (early 2019), we had the older style train on the way out and the newer train on the way back. When I booked there was an announcement on the website that said they were using both trains so the layout you saw when booking your seats may not be the one you actually get. This was definitely true and lots of people who thought they'd booked a table seat were slightly miffed to find out that was not the case. There were also one family booked into seats that didn't exist anymore.. it was all resolved in the end but a slightly stressful start to the journey for them!

We normally travel in Standard Premier and didn't notice too much between the trains, but when walking through standard to get to the buffet cart it definitely seemed more cramped on the older one and just generally more tatty.

I find the newer trains much less comfortable. The seats are narrower and less plush, and that wraparound head rest is gone. It makes the aisle more roomy, though.

Unless anything has changed recently only E300 trains run not the DLP route as E320 cannot stop at Ashford International.

All of the E300 trains are refurbished and personally I think they are nicer than the newer E320 trains. There is one un-refurbished E300 still with Eurostar which is used as a last resort, if you get this train just be grateful they used this train instead of cancelling your service.

Ah. that explains why on our return journey last year we didn't stop at Ashford as we must have had the E320. It must have been a last minute thing as there were lots of people booked to go to Ashford who had to get off at Ebbsfleet instead!
