Risky to fly via Washington DC in January?
I'm considering splitting a holiday in January/February between Washington DC for a week and then flying to Orlando for 2 weeks. I really don't mind cold weather but am I risking getting stuck? How much are flights affected if there is a snowstorm?

Most years in Jan Feb we do a Caribbean cruise out of Fort Lauderdale. We avoid indirect flights via northern states at that time of year - we have been delayed a couple of times in Philadelphia owing to snow. We look to go via Atlanta or Miami nowadays.

Thanks! I've definitely made the right decision then. Booked yesterday with the 20% off arriving at Tampa. Decided we'll do a drive to St Augustine before Disney instead. We did consider Miami but I've never driven in the US before and it seemed a bit daunting!

I havent been to DC in Jan, only in Spring or Autumn, but I do know they can get fairly bad snowstorms so good choice going where you did. St Augustine is just lovely and driving in the US isnt as bad as you would imagine. Big roads make life a bit easier. You will have a great time.

You’ll be fine with the driving. I wasn’t the most confident driver as I started driving when I moved to the country and my driving was limited to small villages and a straight run up the motorway to work but after a few hours I was so comfortable driving in the US, enjoyed it and felt more confident than I did at home because of the larger roads, larger parking spots, the automatic car etc.. Some people who’ve never done it make it out to be very scary, esp when you’re female, I had 4 cabin crew around my seat “to get a look at me”! when mine found out we were flying to Phoenix to do a 2,000 miles road trip. If it had been my first time driving I’d have been put off by their reaction but my own opinion is that driving here is far more difficult, even country driving gives you skills that will over qualify you for driving around Florida. There’s also a guide in the transport sub forum so have a read of that.
