Northumberland family activities
Hi guys,
We’re going on a Family trip to Northumberland mon-fri 2 kids in tow. Just wondered if anyone can recommend places to visit or eat? We are planning beamish and hopefully Alnwick gardens, a beach? All this is weather permitting I guess we’ll have to dress accordingly, ha ha. Any recommendations would be great... thank you!

There is a lovely walk from Craster to Dunstanburgh castle . Low Newton is also a lovely beach and there is a lovely pub set in the corner of the square of houses with tables all outside.
If you are going to Alnwick Barter Books is worth a visit - they have a lovely cafe which does delicious home cooked food. The macaroni cheese is to die for! Cragside and Wallington are both National trust so will need to be booked in advance but both have lovely grounds with plenty of interesting walks - don't think the adventure playgrounds are open though unfortunately. Seahouses is good for boat trips out to the Farne Islands - there have been a lot of dolphin sightings this year so you may be lucky Bamburgh castle is open - and the beach at Bamburgh is beautiful. The Blue Reef aquarium at Tynemouth is a good place to visit when it is raining. Tynemouth Longsands is another lovely beach and you can hire paddleboards, surfboards etc. The View is a llovely place to eat and at the opposite end of the beach there is Crusoes - set right on the beach it is a good place for tea/coffee and light meals. St Marys Island at Whitley Bay is also a lovely place to go - there are usually grey seals hauled on the rocks and there is plenty of opportunity for rock pooling. If you are in Whitley Bay Trenchers fish and chip restaurant at Spanish City is very good and ice cream from Di Meo's at the bottom of Marine Avenue is delicious So much to see and do - I am sure you will have a lovely time Edited at 10:56 AM. |

Beach - Ross farm or sugar sands. They are that good, it’s a secret! Don’t tell anyone.
Northumberlandia. Centre for life in Newcastle (not sure if it’s open). Eat - depends on what you like. Joiners arms up the coast, lola rosso in Morpeth, botanist in Newcastle. Waves swimming pool at Whitley Bay. If you’re specific with your area in Northumberland I could recommend better (and kids age)

The list of places you could visit are long and an idea of the area you are staying would help with more suggestions.
Lots of great ideas have been given-Halowa is definitely givng you some secret beach info! I would also suggest checking out North East Family fun website/blog/FB which has some great ideas and could help with more age range activities. |

Remember to check out the requirement to book places in advance at places like these.
Bamburgh is great for beach, followed by fish& chips in Seahouses 3 miles down the coast. Holy Island is a bit further north but an interesting and unique place to visit, with the novelty of the causeway being submerged when the tide comes in. Check tide times online. Edited at 03:51 PM. |

For that age you could take them paddle boarding (warkworth or Tynemouth). Surfing lesson at Bamburgh or coasteering at howick. Just google them.
Fox lakes at Dunbar, approx 30 mins north of Berwick upon tweed. Loads of trout fisheries where you could hire equipment and probably give you a lesson. Farne islands trip. Woodhorn colliery museum.
