We’re doing the same when our sky contract ends in February.

I’m going to check my TV too though we’ve realised we record very little these days as the majority of what we watch on terrestrial TV is on catch-up.

However still good to have the function to record if needed

I'm curious to know if it works - even if I never use it. I noted that it requires a USB hard drive rather than just a memory stick.

On a related note does anyone know if you can still record the FTA channels on a Sky HD box once you cancel sky?

I thought on the old HD boxes you needed to pay sky £10 a month to do that but may be wrong.

Good spot. I bet a lot of people miss that and then it won’t work.

I’m trying to find if my smart tv has the capability. It really should do as it’s only a year old!

Some TV's work with USB sticks, some only with portable hard drives. You need to check the requirements for your specific TV.

Some hard disks will also require external power as well depending on the TV and HDD.

Safest option is a HDD with a split power feed which should cover pretty much any compatible TV.

I've just done a test with a 5TB WD passport drive and the results were "interesting".

I forced a proper power down of the TV (a Sony bravia android)

I then connected the external drive

I then switched on the TV and it detected the drive as shown below:

Because this drive contains a backup of my home photos and videos I declined but it looks hopeful !
