Route 66

Planning for 2022, want as much info as possible, plan to fly into LA then drive to Chicago as done LA few times but never Chicago so will have few days there at the end,
Do u pre book hotels or just see where u are each night, if prebooked where would u advise.
Which sites do we need to see etc
Any tips appreciated thank u

My mil did Route 66 a few years back (Chicago to LA) Make sure to have a good search for car hire as most charge massive fees for the one way hire.

Thank u, I know Alamo n avis dont from California to Nevada, done few times but not sure if this would be sane going to chicsgo

Hi think you need to look at this in a different way. Have a look at the route and what is close to it that you would like to see . Then work out your days around this and travel times.

Will do but just want some ideas of must sees and decent/safe places to stay as havent a clue, always prefer recommendations especially when going into unknown territory, did 3wks west coast trip 4yrs ago but all hotels were booked from recommendations on here n I'm pleased cos some places looked quite dodgy n wouldnt have wanted to stay there

California and Nevada don’t have one way drop off fees for most car rentals, but I think most do for California to Chicago.

I have heard very different stories about how enjoyable it is or isn’t doing it! If you like a lot of driving (I don’t) I’m sure you’ll be ok. There have been some good trip reports but I would take great care to check what is still open as I believe many original obvious stops are less all the time

I had a look at this last year, Hertz wanted $700 one way drop off fee whilst Alamo was slightly cheaper at $500

I've been looking for our road trip next year through BA flights and car hire. Its worked out £200 pp cheaper to fly into Lax and out of chicago than the other way around? Just do a custom booking and you can put where you pick up and drop off car hire. Its not as expensive as I thought tbh.

We pre booked all our hotels as there were certain ones we wanted to stay in such as the wigwam hotel in Holbrook,the great Texan and we wanted to spend time sightseeing and not worrying were to stay
We also did detours to Vegas ,monument valley and lake havasu .
