Tonsillectomy
Good evening all,
I found out this week that I have asymmetric tonsils and GP referred me to the hospital under the 2 week rule and now I have been told I have to have both removed. Has anyone had this operation as an adult and any tips to recover quickly? Many thanks

I have. I had them out almost 6 years ago. I was 43. It was quite easy. I was off work for just under 2 weeks. I actually stayed in the house for the first week as my dh had me warned not to do anything and to take it easy lol. I do remember being a bit concerned towards the end of the second week and visiting my gp as I thought they looked ‘bad’ but he said they were absolutely normal for the stage they were at in the healing process. I went back to work. I can’t remember for sure but I probably limited how much I was talking.
All in all it was an easy enough procedure and recovery |

Our daughter had them out aged 28 at Bart’s, when she lived in London. She was a rotten patient and ignored advice to eat ‘scratchy’ foods. She did get an infection , but was off work for 2 weeks. She did whinge quite a lot about the pain, (I am obviously a rubbish mum!) but was given a liquid painkiller (she couldn’t have swallowed tablet).

My DH had his out a few years ago and it seemed to be quite bad in terms of pain afterwards. But he was good and followed the scratchy food advice and after two weeks he was back to normal pretty much. I took time off work the first week to look after him (and limit the chance of infection) and I was really glad I did.
Not something I’d like to go through but for him the problems he had were resolved and so that made it worthwhile!

I had mine out three or four years ago. Didn't really have many issues in terms of pain. I was eating dry toast the morning after. They do say to try getting back to normal eating as soon as possible. Couple of weeks off work to prevent infection risk and I was back up and running.

I had mine removed decades ago. It was okay and much better than I had anticipated.
I had them removed very early in the morning and by tea time I was eating a poached egg on toast. It wasn't easy but I was hungry and persevered. Small bites and chew well. My throat felt so much better after I had eaten. With pain relievers, it's very manageable. Eat a little and often, that's what the Nuns told me, it cleans the back of your throat off also drink lots ... At the end of the first week, I went to see The Hollies at a venue in Bristol so I was up and about. I had two weeks off work and was fine to go back at that point. |

My 19yr old daughter had hers out last Thursday. Best advice is to work out a thorough drug regime to keep ahead if the pain. She’s on paracetamol, ibuprofen and codeine, along with a medicated mouthwash. She’s doing great, eating normally and went out for lunch today with a friend and ate pizza! I’d say day 2 was the most painful. Best of luck

I had mine out at 35. Scratchy food is best (and less painful to eat). I wasn’t too bad the first few days and just as I thought I was over the worst the pain started, it definitely got more painful the second week.
