Take paracetamol/ibruprofen
Bonjela for the ulcers and if they are really rubbing you can also rinse with salt water

I had them and first few days just uncomfortable but then everything toughens up and you will be fine. So worth it for the end result! Just be aware as I wasn’t told, you will need to wear the retainers afterwards for the rest of your life.

As above, Ibuprofen and adult Bonjela. Also, get some of the dental wax that you can make into a little ball to put on any individual brackets that might rub. You can buy it in the dental surgery or any orthodontists (mine were all given some when their braces were put on).

Hi, I had Damon braces for two years and followed groups on Facebook for advice.
The best tips were to buy a water flosser which was brilliant at getting rid of any bits of food that got stuck around the metalwork and to buy silicone ear plugs which you can break bits off and press over anything that is digging in. It sticks on the bracket until you pull it off and let’s your mouth heal. |

I currently have ceramic braces.
What I've found really helpful has been: Orthodontic wax - this really made my life much better in the first couple of weeks of having braces. Just put a little bit on top of whichever bit of the braces were making my gum/cheeks sore, and because it's orthodontic wax it wasn't a big deal if I accidentally swallowed some of it. After the first couple of weeks though I got used to having braces and no longer need the wax! Water flosser - really helpful especially if I don't have time to use proper floss (see below) Oral B super floss - this is designed for braces and I've been using this to floss. It took a while to get used to though and the first time I used it I took forever to floss - it's much faster now that I'm used to it! Other floss alternatives I found but didn't try: platypus floss sticks, some sort of floss threader thing (this sounded like a huge faff though).
