I nearly fell foul to that on our first trip over there. I was tired and went into auto mode, luckily something clicked and i stopped and double checked.

But it sounds as though he has been ripped off. He is happy to pay for the half a tank of fuel at $10 per gallon, but they have charged him for a full tank. These car hire companies will try any trick in the book to extract money from you..

Usually manufacturers will put a D somewhere on the back of the vehicle in the model name ie 316D or HDi

Take out your vehicle’s documents, i.e; car owner’s manual. Probably in the glove box
Go to the section on fluids. The type and grade of fuel required for the vehicle will be clearly indicated.

Also a good tip if your not sure which side the filler cap is on then look at the fuel gauge on the dashboard the arrow will tell you which side the caps on
As you can see in the pic it's on the left
How many dibbers will be checking this tomorrow lol

Got stung with a big fuel charge last time I went in 2019 , there was a big hurricane coming into Miamai and all the fuel stations had massive lines as people were panicking . Didn't was with Avis they were annoyed when I dropped the car off and charged my $250 . Tried to complain no joy so just unlucky I suppose.
