If charging infrastructure was better, would you jump from Tesla? and what to? I'm eyeing up the Y for later in the year.

I picked up my second Tesla Model 3 a couple of weeks ago having done 38,500 miles in the first one. I had no hesitation in getting another Tesla because of their supercharging infrastructure, the car itself, and them giving me 88% of its value back in part exchange after having it 20 months and doing those miles. They are currently advertising it for the same price I paid for it new.

I'm hearing too many stories from other EV owners who can't rely on the non-Tesla chargers working when they get there, whereas with a Tesla you can see on the in-car map how many are free and working.

Ironically there were loads of the Tesla chargers available. Wish they'd get on and share with us mere mortals like they have in Europe.

We did end up finding a fast charger at McDonald's on the way back

My tip is make lots of contingency plans. On the way back we had a list of around 10 places so could go from one to another. The first one worked though. McDonalds Colney has 2 fast chargers

Tesla are very good. I had quite a few initial minor issues mainly when I got it, but hats off to them they fixed everything with good service. Since the kinks were ironed out I’ve had no other issues. The charging network and technology are the main reasons to buy a Tesla. Since I bought mine, it’s been substantially upgraded through software, from better performance to three new UIs, sentry, dash cams, better charging etc. It often updates twice a month with improvements. One came on yesterday and I can now drag and drop apps to my favourite bar. No other car maker does this.

They also seem to retain value very well.

So would I jump, not sure. Theres some good other cars about like the new Hyundai but without the charging network can’t look.

I fancy a Y myself but I think it’s about £5k overpriced in the U.K. they really pushed the boundaries of reasonableness with that. It’s a great car though, loads of space. They are however developing a single chassis now, which will allow a new built in battery tech which they can make for less money and will go further. This may launch next year so I may wait.

I’d like the space over the 3 but my wife has a 4x4 and so can live with less. If it was the only car I’d get a Y for sure next.

Now the Best Buy is the bog standard Model 3. They put some incremental new battery tech in it. Can constantly keep it charged at 100%. New processors, new heat pump. It now gets nearly what the old long range did in mileage, and is somewhat of a bargain at £42k. That’s what my head is telling me to get next, but I’ll keep the S for another 12 months I think. It’s an amazing car, one downside it’s the widest car in the UK I believe and something of a challenge on the smaller UK roads.

My S- I’ve had it 3 years and it’s lost about 20% of its value from new. Which isn’t bad at all for such an expensive motor, and so it hasn’t cost me that much at all really- obviously you lose less with a cheaper version, another reason to think about the base M3. I also picked it up heavily discounted so the 20% isn’t off what the list price was by some margin. People told me Tesla didn’t discount, funny how I got over £10k off mine through some hard negotiation at month end. That was 3 years ago now, I doubt you’d have much success on a Y or 3.

The other thing about Tesla is they keep the basic model the same for years and years, and just really update the tech, often with no fanfare, like they’ve just done with the 3. It likely means the car remains current for years. Yes, they’ve released a new S in the States (very expensive) with fancy new interior after all these years, but the outside basically looks the same. It’s changed a lot under the hood though with incredible performance, at a price. They are not out here until maybe 2023.

This is why I couldn’t live without Tesla or should I say the network. Assuming your very long journey is on a motorway somewhere, no contingency plans required. I’ve done 600 mile trips, no stress, no worry really. If they did open it up, I may consider another make if it wasn’t overall a better deal, but other manufacturers can’t match the tech currently either.

My dh has an Audi etron RS and we have found the best place to charge are services as they usually have quite a few fast chargers but have seen that the tesco near Gatwick is meant to have chargers, not ideal but you could go in for a coffee and hopefully it’s a fast charger so half hour will see you well.

I don't think it is a fast charger sadly or we would have done that
