Rialto Bridge and St Mark's square are the 2 main areas, they're around a 20-30 minute walk away from each other, other than that, a boat out to see Murano & Burano, for the glass and lace, is a nice afternoon out.
I'd struggle to fill 5 days to be honest so personally would be looking to explore a little further, maybe a day trip into the vineyards? We've been twice, once with the kids for New Year for 4 nights and DH & I went last week for 3 nights for our anniversary, we spent the first day walking round Venice, taking in the sights and the second day on the water buses over to Murano. Gondola's are 80 Euros for 30 minutes during the day and 100 at night, they all charge the same amount across the island. One nice tip we had was to go up to the rooftop at Fondaco dei Tedeschi for the views of the canal, and it was stunning, you do have to book, but it's free. Enjoy, it's a beautiful place.

We had the boat pass for 4 days, which meant you could jump on and off the boats as many times as you liked. The best thing about Venice was not having reservations and just stumbling across gorgeous restaurants and cafes etc. You meander through streets and the farther away from St Marks Square you can get the better. Stop for coffee/drinks and just enjoy people watching. If we saw people walking one way, we would walk the other. Trying to get lost is fun (you never do as you can always find a sign for St Marks Sq no matter where you are ).

Absolutely agree with this, we did a fair bit or research for somewhere special to eat on our anniversary night, but in the end decided to just see what we found, we weren't disappointed at all, it was a lovely relaxed way to do it.

The water buses go there, you can buy them in 1 or multi-day passes, it’s 20 euros each for one day (24 hours not calendar day),I ‘think’ 3 days was 54, they’re great value.

We were in Venice for six days last June and loved it and didn’t run out of things to do. We stayed in the Canneregio area, which we felt was perfect and not too far from St Mark’s but a little quieter.
We loved wandering and finding lots of small churches to look in, and little restaurants to eat and drink at. The aperol spritz was delicious 😀 We bought a 48 hour vaporetto pass and visited the Lido one day with it, and Murano and Burano another day. Both day trips were wonderful. We also visited the Basilica and Campanile in St Mark’s, Doge’s Palace and Correr Museum (both excellent). Also Rialto Bridge (busy but beautiful) and the Accadamia Art Museum (wonderful for art lovers) We went into lots of churches, some we paid a few euros to enter and others were free. One of our favourite was San Zacharria which was free to enter but we paid a little more to see the flooded crypt there. We also walked down to the Arsenale and then to the Garibaldi statue with a small green park area and pond with turtles in. We found eating away from the main areas was much nicer and cheaper than close to St Mark’s. We ate along the Canneregio Canal, a bar called Al Parliamento (or similar) was particularly good value and delicious, as was a small outdoor cafe in Campo San Sebastiano (amazing tortellini). We loved Venice and would definitely return. |

I went on the three island tour which I would recommend. Verona for the day is also a good idea! You’ll have a great time ☺️

As others have said, just wandering around, off the beaten track, is one of the joys of Venice. We ’discovered’ the gondola boatyard and the floating market on one of our rambles last October.
