Food and Wine Festival 2009
Cape Town - South Africa Seared Beef Tenderloin with Sweet Potato Purée, Mango Barbecue Sauce $4.75 The aromas of sizzling steak made it difficult to pass by this booth without stopping for a sample. I like sweet/savoury dishes, but I found the combo of sweet potato and mango BBQ sauce overpoweringly sweet. I needed some wine with a touch of acidity to help balance out the flavours . …. A glass of Fairview Winery Pinotage did the job nicely. Athens - Greece We weren’t the only passers-by to be drawn in by the tempting aroma of grilled chicken and herbs that filled the air around the busy Greek booth. Paul enjoyed the Spanokopita - a warm flaky pastry filled with spinach and cheese, while I went for the Chicken Souvlaki. Spanakopita -$3.75 Chicken Souvlaki with Tzatziki - $4.00 Sorry you can’t see the nice piece of grilled chicken sitting on the Pita - it’s hidden under a blanket of Tzatziki (I asked for extra ) Greek Salad with Pita Bread - $2.75 The Greek Salad was tasty and refreshing. The Feta was added to the salad just before it was served, not already mixed in, like it was last year - much better. We went back to Greece a few times but never did try the Baklava. I wish we had - these ones were still warm and smelled sweet and delicious. Edited at 05:41 PM. |

Cabernet Short Ribs with Mashed Potatoes $4.50 Chocolate Milk Crème Brulee $3.75 I was anticipating soft short rib simmered in a rich red wine sauce. The beef was lovely and tender, but the sauce lacked seasoning.…... and Cabernet. I did quite like it, but it was just a very hearty portion of meat and mashed potato really. I didn’t try it myself, but Paul said the Chocolate Milk Crème Brulee was a bit too Nesquick-ish tasting for his liking. |

Sukiyaki Beef $4.00 Beef Sushi! Fine slivers of grilled beef wrapped in seaweed and sticky rice, served with the traditional accompaniments of spicy wasabi and refreshing pickled ginger. It was packed with flavour but very light - the perfect snack for such a hot day. Wish I’d gone back for another one. |

Cannelloni $4.50 This veggie pasta dish reminded us of airline food! Thankfully it wasn’t actually as dry and inedible as it looks, but it wasn't good the sauce tasted processed and the ricotta filling in the cannelloni was very bland. Not impressed! |

Grilled Lamb Chop, Red Wine Sauce, Murray River Sea Salt $5.50 I’m glad I could use a snack credit as $5.50 seemed bit excessive for one little lamb chop. Three baby bites and it was gone. I probably wouldn’t have paid OOP for it, on principle. It was rather tasty though! Lamington $3.00 The Lamington was lovely - light as a feather sponge cake covered in chocolate and coconut. Very nice indeed. If a bit small. Oh, the wine was Penfolds Koonunga Hill Shiraz Cabernet. It paired very nicely with the lamb. |
