Ds13 dreams of being a pilot
As described, son would love to be a pilot. He's just turned 13. Has anyone any experience of the training, qualifications, cost involved?
Ideally I'd love to be able to speak to a pilot but don't know any . Dibbers always know useful info! Thanks in advance

That is my friend's son dream, he has been currently taking flying lessons for few years at preswick airport in Glasgow. 1 a month as its about £250 a time, that's not including medical's and various other fees. He started when he was 16 or 17 years old.
He is currently doing aeronautics enginneering at Glasgow uni going into 4th and now hoping after 4th to get a job doing his commercial pilot licence, or getting funding to complete this. I think there is other ways to complete this but reall not sure.

Wow! Kerching! We live right by a small airport and I'm thinking of booking him a trip up in a small plane and possibly a lesson experience so we can see if it is something to pursue. Better start saving hey!

He could try joining the air cadets I think they can join from year 8. They get the opportunity to go flying. I did it when I was younger and it was a fab way to make new friends and get loads of different experiences including flying

DS10 wants to be a pilot but we've recently found out he is colourblind. There doesn't seem to be a definitive answer on whether he can still become a pilot or not

Check he's not colour blind (seriously) before you spend any money or even encourage him. DS was interested in becoming a pilot but is colour blind so that Idea never got off the ground (boom boom!)

He's not colour blind but there may be a medical issue that could hinder it, that's why ideally I wanted to talk to a pilot

Kestrel029 is a pilot - hasn't posted on here for a while but may be worth a private message?

My sister was training to be a navigator but failed at some stage. Think both need really good maths qualification. Hers was a degree .

Maybe write to the RAF and organise work experience with them in year 9 (is it still year 9?)
I didn't fancy anything on the approved list so sorted myself out. I flew almost every day 😊 I also spent some time with the fire dept, checked some weather reports, did some filing and visited some other bases. I had the best 2 weeks! This was 25 years ago mind you but I'm sure you could enquire. |
