We've only just had a new one built so they can't be doing that bad .
Maybe they're just closing the lesser performing ones

The 'online shopping effect'

The internet is killing the High Street.

They are opening a new store in the Intu expansion at Watford so they can't be doing that bad geberally. I'm guessing they are rationalising their stores and the ones not generating profit will be the ones that close. Online shopping -which Debenhams do a lot of - is the way people shop these days, so if anybody is to blame it's the public themselves who shop with their laptops and ipads rather than visiting the shops themselves. It's way cheaper to get orders via the internet that it is to operate a store.

As per the link above:

"the group announced a 6.4% drop in pre-tax profits to £87.8 million"

So, Debenhams isn't doing as well as it hoped.

Haha. I like this typo.

For some reason I read it as gerbilly, which made me chuckle.

You could say that it's the stores themselves that are to blame. They created these online websites and they made it easy for us to buy things online. It's cheaper (i.e. more profit) for a company to run an online store than a physical store and hence the owners will prefer their online presence to do well.

However, they announced that they'll be closing 11 warehouses. Surely this affects it's online presence as well?

Of course, it's not good news for the workers employed at these shops though. Fingers crossed they manage to find alternative work.

It's companies like Amazon and the lax tax rules applied to them that are to blame. The high street stores have to do something to compete as they have so much more overheads.

Our high street in Carlisle is becoming a bit of a ghost town, the only new shop to open is Primark. We do have a Debenhams which seems to do well and is always busy when they have promotions on, so I do hope they don't close ours.
