Tokyo for 2 weeks plus one week in ? City

Going to Japan in September for three weeks. Flights in and out of Tokyo. Thinking of doing Tokyo DisneyLand/Sea/city and surrounding areas first two weeks. Would like to do third week in another City.

Any recommendations where else to visit or must do city within easy reach/distance from/to Tokyo.

Any thoughts/things to do in Kyoto or Osaka.

Any advice/recommendations welcome on how to best plan/get the most out of our three weeks there.

Thanks
Catriona

Kyoto. I have recently put the Kyoto phase of our trip on my trip report. Visit temples (too numerous to list), Ninjo-jo castle, feed deer in Nara, book a tea ceremony, dress in Yukata for the day, explore Kyoto station watch the light show walk the skywalk. Try to go during a festival time (we went during Gion float festival).

Osaka is day trip-able from Kyoto (about 40-50 mins via train). It is also possible to do universal studios from a kyoto base if you wish.

You could take a day trip from Kyoto to Hiroshima. Sounds gruesome but the museum and memorial gardens are interesting and thought-provoking.

From memory it takes about 1h 30 mins on the bullet train.

I read the Kyoto part of your trip report and found it very helpful. Thank you.

Kyoto is beautiful. Fushimi Inari Shrine was my favorite part of the whole trip.

Make sure to get their early, we arrived at 6:30am and it was perfect, basically had the place to ourselves.

Our time at Fushimi Inari was too late in the morning. At lower levels is was a scrum and not pleasant.

Most of the crowd disappear at the first "toilet stop" though so dont despair if you cannot get there early- you just need to go higher!

Kyoto with day trips to Hiroshima, Nara, Himeji Castle and Osaka. We did this last year (except Osaka as we didn’t have time). There is also a Universal Studios near Osaka if you are interested.

Edit: a great day trip from Tokyo is Hakone. It’s a long day but we loved it and it’s one of the best days we had on the whole trip. I really recommend the open air museum there - it’s a stop on the Hakone train loop.

Edited at 02:00 PM.
