Esta advice
Hi, I have just been checking our Estas for our august trip and 2 of my sons don't run out until 4th September and we are due to leave Orlando on the 2nd September so my question is would you renew them or just leave it until next time? TIA

As I understand it, you only need a valid esta on the day of entry. Personally I would renew now as the situation with covid is still fluid and a delay of a few weeks is always possible. I'm sure plenty of people will come along and say not to bother and to seek out maximum value for money. It's completely up to you.

Normally I would say it's fine, but if one of you tests positive out there and cant fly home for a few days extra then you are stuck

That doesn’t matter an estate on needs to be valid for entry to the USA, mine expired once when I was there.
I would leave them .

We only had one day left on ours when we arrived. Like everyone else has said, only needed for date of entry. X

If you couldn't travel on the date you plan would you look to delay by a few weeks?
If yes it's worth renewing now, if not and you would reschedule to next year then you may as well wait. So depends on your flexibility and desire to travel near that time. |

This is the best response. ESTA is about authorisation to travel to the US. It has to be valid on the day of entry, at which point the officer grants you entry, and once you have entry you no longer need to travel to the US on account of already being there.
Only if you consider someone testing positive and you all travel a few weeks later is it an issue.

The only time this is goign to be a problem is the small amount of people that might go on a cruise and enter a south american/caribbean country during the trip, as then they would need to go back through border control when they disembark and then the ESTA might have expired.
It's a niche issue, but it completes the otherwise excellent answer already given |

As others have posted, the Esta only needs to be valid on entry into the US, mine expired whilst I was there and didn’t have any problems.
