Respite care advice
My fil has carers three times a day. My husband is in to see him at least once a day. The council provide his carers. So who do we contact to see if we / he qualifies for respite care ? We are in Scotland. Do we go through his doc, the carers service or the social work. My husband is an only child so all the care is on our shoulders. Does anyone know ?

In London you need to go through the local council's social work team. Sorry, not sure if it's the same in Scotland.

You go through the social worker and they will advise of the most local care home which provides respite care.

You normally have to go through the Social Services in Scotland in the first instance but this article might help careinfoscotland.scot/topics...f-short-break/
My Dad had dementia and was referred by his psychiatric nurse for "day care" where he was picked up twice a week and looked after for the day. There was also an annual amount that could be spent on either helping take him on a break or respite care in a Care Home. This does vary from region to region and I know a lot of respite care has sadly been cut right back but if he has carer's going in he should at least be in the system. Also there are local carer's groups throughout Scotland that normally have someone you can go to see or phone to discuss what help is available in your area. In our region it comes under Carers of West Lothain but if you google your area there will hopefully be something similar. Edited at 08:42 PM. |

Thanks everyone. It’s another minefield. He has dementia so no idea who anyone is so worried that respite may upset him even more but hubby badly needs a break - just a few days.
