Las Vegas or Bust - Day 3

Tuesday 15th March 2005

We don’t manage to sleep the night through and we are awake by 4.30am. Time to write up the trip report and decide what we are going to do today.

After a quick breakfast in the food court, we decide that we will visit the Hoover Dam and Bolder City and by 8.30am we are on our way. Blue skies again today, the weather continues to be kind to us. We arrive at the Dam at about 9.30am after stopping for a quick photo stop at Lake Mead. After the usual security checks we are ushered into the first talk/PowerPoint demonstration of the tour. This is all about the history of the dam giving the usual facts and figures. Next we are taken to the lifts and it’s down to see the generators in action. Our guide tells us that electricity is only a by-product if the dam. It was built to regulate the flow of water and to stop all the terrible flooding. The tour takes us back up to the observation deck to another tour guide. We are told that the state line between Arizona and Nevada runs through the dam and the time is also 1 hour different on the Arizona side. So we walk across the dam and take our pictures in two different time zones.

Back to the Nevada side and the final exhibit, which shows us the full extent of the Colorado River and the dams that have been built to stem the flow. Rick buys his souvenir piece of copper pipe, back to the car and we make our way back to the Strip area to do some more shopping!

We have an early supper in the Nile Deli and take a huge piece of Carrot Cake back to our room for later.

Tonight’s show is KA at the MGM Grand. I absolutely love it, but Rick’s not so sure. The MGM is the most expensive place to buy water - $5.00 for a small bottle, which we find on sale later on in the week for $1.12. Before we leave we find out if the Monorail is running. We want to use it tomorrow and our plan is to start at the Stratosphere and make our way back.

We visited Hoover Dam last August on the way from Grand Canyon to Las Vegas and I took a photo of Emily with one foot in Nevada and one foot in Arizona, but I don't remember there being a time difference.
We had to leave early as it started lightning and my friend who was driving us said you don't hang around all that electricity in a storm!
The storm got worse as we headed into Las Vegas and by the time we got there the strip was flooded!
An hour or so later and you wouldn't even know there had been a storm!
Love Rio
