Varifocals first time *UPDATE*

Picked up my varifocals from Tesco today and I’m really struggling with them. I’ve only had reading glasses before and was advised that they would take up to a week to get used to (chose the dearest option).

When I tried them in store I was okay sat and reading but as soon as I stood up I felt woozy and felt like I was looking in a hall of mirrors with the sides curving in. The guy in store said this was normal but told me to wait until I got home before wearing them in the house for a few hours then to wear them continually from tomorrow.

Well I’ve literally had them on a few minutes and feel so sick as everything is skewed as soon as I move my head slightly, is this normal to feel so bad, I can’t imagine I’ll be able to persevere if I can’t manage a few minutes. Any help/advice appreciated.

*Update*

Just thought I’d update. Called back in to Tesco today and 2 Optical Assistants spent ages with me checking my prescription and my glasses and listening to my concerns. They could not have been more helpful or sympathetic. As my distance prescription is only very minor I don’t feel that I particularly need them for distance (my main use would be for reading and computer).

We have agreed to change one pair to reading and the other pair for computer and they have refunded the cost of the varifocal lens. I’m so relieved as I was anticipating a battle but they were lovely, great Customer Service.

Sorry to hear this but I could have written this post. I got varifocals for the first time last October supposedly so I could drive in them. Well I could hardly walk in them! I tried and tried but felt sick, got headaches, felt I was in a hall of mirrors - just awful. I gave them a go for 4 weeks but found them really hard to get into for reading and the computer, and it actually was making my neck and shoulders ache too as you have to move your head not your eyes! I ended up taking them back and got them changed for free back to reading only. Luckily our Tesco had this option, no way I would have risked nearly £300 without it. They did recheck them and altered the angle but still didn't work for me. They didn't kick up a fuss.

Hope you can get it sorted one way or the other!

BTW apparently it is fairly rare that you can't get on with them, my dsil got them the same time as me and loves them!

my friend had exactly the same problem and specsavers swapped them for her.

I had mine a couple of years ago and love them, never felt any different to my old glasses. I would try a bit round the house, but I think they suit some people and not others.

Snap. Got mine last April, never been happy. Have learnt to tolerate them. Really struggle with the computer as there is such a small area or clearness ie unless my head is totally at the right angle its blurred. Constantly moving my head to see out of the small clear area. And to top it all have been back to opticians as the reading area was becoming blurred to be told my prescription has changed and a need new ones. I know the only other option is two pairs of glasses and dont want to go down that route so looks like lm starting over again.

Everyone says you need to give them time to get used to them but how do you ever know if they just need time or arent right?

Thanks for your reply, I’m glad it’s just not me. I feel such a wuss but there is no way I’ll be able to get used to them, I’ve just tried again for a few minutes and feel sea sick 🤢. I’m going to call back into Tesco and ask them to switch them to reading glasses, they cost me £310 as I was talked into dearest lenses as they “only take 1 week to get used to”.

It may be where they have "put the line". Ever since my first pair of varifocals I have never had a problem. Took to them straight away. However, I can have problems when golfing. I believe its due to the rapid movement of the eyes from the hole to the ball. It causes me to feel dizzy at times.

I have varifocal glasses and contact lenses and I have to say I love them both.

I must be one of the lucky ones as I walked out of specsavers in mine and have never looked back.

DH got his first varifocals in walmart last year. When we came home he just couldn't get on with them and gave up. On our next trip he took them back in to walmart intending to use the almost new frames and just get new normal lenses. When he explained, they spent ages with him checking how he was using them, checked all the measurements were right, made some slight adjustments to the frame, then gave him about a 20 minute lesson on"how" to use them correctly. Saved us a fortune! Don't give up, go back to your optician for advice. Do they have any kind of satisfaction guarantee?

Hi, yes I’m sure they told me there was a no quibble refund if I couldn’t get on with them. I will go and have a chat.
