Even booking this late, it only cost us $368 for four people including hold baggage.

There are quite a few airports around LA, and many of them have numerous flights a day to pretty much everywhere you'd like to go, so if you can be slightly flexible on airport and time (ie flying in the middle of the day when commuters won't be using flights) you can fly for next to nothing.
I agree. On our cancelled March vacation, we had SL Obispo to Tacoma. It was £80pp, booked well in advance.
It would have been great because we missed the best part of the PCH when we visited in 2018 due to the mudslide and were returning to see it. We did not want to go on beyond SL Obispo. We also wanted to see Renton, Seattle and Vancouver, but had no intention of driving all that way. Those flights would have enabled us at a brilliant price.

Last August we flew Laguardia to Dayton OH (£83pp) and then a few days later, Cincinatti to MCO (£87pp).

Trains have also worked very well for us a few times on the East Coast. Boston-Penn Stn is quicker than flying it when you take into account getting to airport, check in, security, waiting to board, reclaim, getting from airport to destination.
Penn Stn to Washington DC also.

There are many ways to skin a cat and in multi centre vacations, research is everything 😀

Just played with dates and can get £600pp with bags etc if we go a week later so am going to book I think! We can also add the Venetian on for 4 nights for a good price and pay deposit only which I quite like the idea of given true current climate! Thanks for your help!
