I am stupid!
I bought a gammon joint during my stressful shopping trip this week to cook for Christmas/Boxing Day. I only realised when I opened the meat drawer in the fridge last night that the use by date is Boxing Day. I don’t even know why I bought it so early, or why I didn’t check the date... other than I am stupid.🙄😂
Guess who is having Nigellas ham in cola this weekend then buying another gammon next week... 🙈 |

Most of us have done it at some point
However your gammon is perfectly fine to have over xmas the use by date is simply when it needs to be cooked by its still perfectly safe to eat after that date. So cook it xmas day/boxing day and it will be fine 3-5 days after as usual Edited at 11:49 AM. |

Use by to me would be cook by so I’d still keep it and cook it Boxing Day and it’d be fine cold the day after.
So you were smart beating the rush not stupid Edited at 11:48 AM. |

I'm confused if its use by date is Boxing day and you want it cooked for Christmas day/Boxing day then it's fine 🤷
I bought ready cooked roasted potatoes from M&S this week for Christmas day for first time and as I was putting them in fridge noticed the use by date is 22/12, we are still using them for Christmas day.

Either freeze it or just cook on Boxing Day. The use by extends once cooked.

It's fine, I'd also say use by is cook by. If you feel happier cooking it early do it on Christmas eve.

Thanks all. I should be fine with it then. We normally have it Christmas Day and Boxing Day then use what’s left to make cheese and ham toasties the couple of days after. I was a bit worried about poisoning us.😂
