How am I catching colds...

when I haven't been further than our garden since December 23rd?
Ive had 2 colds during that time lasting 3 of 4 days.
O/h walks to the village shop most days but we all have to wear masks from the minute we leave the house untill we get home. The shop is rarely busy and they have masks on too.
Allergies has been suggested as we have cats, but we've always had them its not something new and surely I'd be like it all the time?
I took an antihistamine last time and it made no difference.
Any idea? 🤔

This doesn't really answer your question (I don't think anyone will be able to provide a definitive answer). However, it's worth remembering that masks do not provide anything like 100% protection from viruses. They provide some protection but you can still catch a cold (or any other coronavirus) whilst wearing one. It simply reduces the risk a bit.

Catching two colds in 3 or 4 weeks does seem a bit of bad luck though.

Take antihistamines for a week and see if it makes a difference, we have cat allergies and dust allergies. I keep coughing from time to time an worry it might be Covid but it’s been on and off for six months!

Could it be an allergy rather than a virus?

We tend to pick a lot of bugs up through touch rather than through the air, so can only suggest trying even more handwashing and get your DH to wash his hands the second he comes through the door from his trip to the shop? Teaching granny to suck eggs, I know, but just a suggestion! Hope you're better soon. xx

I had, I thought, a cold in Canada last year. My friend said go take an antihistamine (I always carry them) I did and the 'cold' went within hours!

I just said a week before, one tablet doesn’t work. You have to get them in your system to keep working. If after a week you still have cold symptoms then it’s defiantly a cold.

I've developed cat allergies as Ii've got older. It took 6 weeks on anti histamines to get rid of a persistant sore throat this summer caused by my mum's cat.

Are you washing your mask after every use ? If you are maybe change what you use to wash it with in case you are sensitive to one of the ingredients. You are breathing in detergent residue ,rather than skin contact , with masks so a lot more likely to get a reaction.
