My wife and I did Miami and the Keys in a split between a Corvette and a Mustang. Both worked just fine. We had two large cases and a couple of smaller bags, plus my wife's handbag. It's all do-able if you want to, but yes sometimes it will take some shifting things around to make it work comfortably.
We were even able to have the roof off the Corvette and in the boot, above our luggage on the few drives we need to.

We rented a GMC Acadia (SUV) last June when we did our road trip on the West Coast. It was lovely and roomy for the two of us, and there was lots of luggage space in the boot. Although there was no cover over the boot space, the back windows were extremely dark and therefore kept the luggage obscured - we had taken a couple of empty cases with us to bring stuff back in, and we left those cases in the boot all the time rather than keep lugging them into hotel rooms as we travelled. We had no issues at all, and didn't worry about the cases as they weren't visible from outside the car.

Have a great trip!

We have done many USA Road Trips and always hire a Convertible Mustang, We take two large Holdalls as we go for a month and a small rucksack with personal stuff and medication, and have always managed to get them in the boot. Last October we hired an SUV it was huge and great to drive however no cover for the luggage so we are going back to a Mustang

cheers

Thanks all for your stories. I think we’ll stick with what we’ve booked and if the cases fit then we’re winning! If not then I’ll leave it to him to negotiate a swap with Avis...

We just took a light black fleece blanket to put over our luggage in the back in our two road trips down the east and west coasts

We had a mustang convertible and took 2 large holdalls. We went in October and had to put the roof up and air con on by midday lol.
Last time we had a dodge caravan for 4 of us. Loads of space and comfy.
