Hire car or Uber?

We are staying onsite in August but would like to do some days at Universal and possibly some outlet shopping. Would it be cheaper and easier to hire a car when out there or to Uber the journeys we need? We are a party of 4 and one toddler.

This may seem a strange start to answering your question.

We have never stayed on site and have hired a car on all of our 35 trips because we find it suits our holiday plans far better. In fact what I know about Uber can be written in size 72 font on the back of a stamp.

Which is a completely round about way of saying that I'm certain using Uber would be substantially more economical for your plans. I've no idea how much a Uber from WDW to Universal costs but the saving on parking would greatly offset it. Aren't Disney starting to charge for parking at the resorts soon as well?

One day you could couple maybe a trip to the Mall at Millennia with the Premium Outlets at the top of I-Drive. They are only 5 minutes apart.

Newish Walmart as well at the top of North Old Lake Wilson Road which is now probably the nearest. Everyone should experience Walmart at least once.

I'm a solo traveller who can't drive for health reasons. I stayed on site last September and used Uber when I went to Discovery Cove and Universal/IOA. They were fine, very quick. I used Disney transport the rest of the time.

If you roll your Universal days and outlet days into a single block you could just hire a car for 3 or 4 days. When searching for a pickup location use Lake Buena Vista then choose Disney Car Centre. Ubers are great but you'd need UberXL for 5 of you, bumping up the cost.

we planned to not have a car for the 1st part of our last trip ( we were in orlando for just over 3 weeks in Aug ), the plan was to use uber / lyft , but for the cost difference the freedom of jumping in a car and popping to walmart / target was just not enough, so we hired a car for the entire time

Tried that on our first trip, booked on day one on alamoBrits as we were in LBV and very limited.

Had a car every time since.

Onsite you don't need a car , Magic Express to and from the airport and a part stay prebooked car hire booking for a block of days mid stay for those off site excursions works we.. You can pick up at the on site Car centre at Disney (ring the day before and arrange where on site you want picking up) and they'll drop you back anywhere you want on site or if staying in any of the EPCOT area hotels , you can pick up at the Dolphin.

Car every single time (Personal opinion) especially with a toddler!

With a car there is no waiting around and takes out the 'planning' option where you MUST be at a certain point at a certain time... for me this makes a things a lot easier especially if the kids are having an off day.

Also having car means you can explore and find all those hidden gems. You can't book an Uber and say to them "just drive around an explore" whereas with a car you can do just that.

We cancelled our hire car and just used Disney Resort transport and Uber for trips to Walmart and outlets, so much less stress because it’s so easy. Disney buses were fine and Uber cheap and quick! Would never hire a car again! We also used Uber in Disney too.

We stay offsite and pondered whether or not to rely on Uber entirely for our 2019 trip - we found them extremely convenient for the odd Disney Springs trip, other than needing to travel to/pick out your car from a whack of identical looking ones at the pick up points.

But as a larger group, with a toddler, also take hidden costs into account. Uber XL and cost of child seat can make it less appealing as a permanent alternative to a car.
