Is car rental top up insurance necessary?

We have provisionally booked a Budget rental through Rentalcars.com which includes CDW, SLI ($1m) and Theft cover.

Is this sufficient or is the Extra Protection at £127 (for 19 days) recommended? As far as I can see CDW only covers some bodywork; not engine, tyres, roof, windscreen/glass, lights or undercarriage, nor towing! And is this the same with all the main rental companies?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi. The top up you mention is called many things but is essentially 'Enhanced Roadside Assistance'

It covers undercarriage damage, windscreen cover, misfuelling, lost keys and also they will come out and change a wheel for you ref a puncture.
The price is silly money and if you do decide you want to take it out come back on here and we can point you in the direction of both UK and US 3rd party companies who offer more cover but for a lot less money!

CDW does actually cover windscreens and engines plus all bodyowrk. I have never had the urge to tow with a rental car!

Hi, Thanks for your reply. It sounds like the extra insurance may be unnecessary! When I said towing, I meant the rental being towed, not the rental doing the towing

You can get that extra cover for as little as £30 before you go.

Also, Budget are one of the worst reviewed Rental companies available.
