Were the exchange charges hidden or in their t&cs ?
It should be naughty Clydesdale Bank ...the owners of Virgin Money. (David Duffy) Edited at 11:04 AM. |

I know that Disney have recently changed their CC policy, so I'd guess that as long as you state no room charging then you will be fine, but I'm sure that when I stayed at RPR they "took" a per night hold, in this case you might have to leave that amount in cash- best contact HRH to see what their policy is

if you are not planning on charging to your room then using the CC should not attract and charges and if you do charge something to your room you could clear it in cash before they charge the card.
But if i was you i would apply for an halifax clarity or similar card even if you don't plan to use it , it is ideal for any emergency or impulse buy you may have. |

All US hotels clear outstanding balances overnight just before you checkout, so you need to have zeroed your account before you go to bed that night.
Remember there are charges (such as universal hotel parking) that are auto-debited to your room - do if you have a car you will incur room charges Also some hotels (actually really only Disney ones) charge to your card every time the balance goes above the credit limit they assign to your room at check-in so you might need to pay down your account mid stay (or twice a day) depending on how much you spend |

I didnt want to leave a credit card at universal hotel, I asked at check in and could pay the car park fees in cash.

Thanks everyone this has been really helpful!
I think I will apply for a better CC rather than using my RBS one...even just to have for the future when I will need to charge things abroad. So what is everyones recommendation? I've seen Halifax mentioned..any others so I can compare? |
