I've been twice and I'd say:
- High Line - Statue of Liberty boat tour - Top of the Rock (better than the view from the Empire State as you can see the Empire State, World Trade Center 1 and the Statue of Liberty all in front of you! - 9/11 Museum (although it is quite harrowing) - Times Square

I loved Greenwich village, I'm a big friends & sex & the city fan so went to see the friends building & carries apartment there, wish we would have had more time in Greenwich village to wonder round
Loved stone street aswell in the financial district near Wall Street, it's a little cobbled street with restaurants with lots of outdoor seating, great atmosphere in the summer but gets busy Magnolia bakery for cakes, the cheesecake is gorgeous We did both Empire State & TOTR & we preferred Empire State, the views are spectacular & so iconic, TOTR has a better view of Central Park & obviously the added bonus of seeing Empire State but much preferred ES Hope to go back in the next few years it's an amazing city

On our list is;
An observation deck (we getting married in one world observatory, but might do TOTR on our 1st night) A day in Central Park - the zoo and all the sights Brooklyn Bridge Wall Street, 9/11 memorials (would also recommend the museum, but our children are too young) High line and a trip to Chelsea market Explore the different areas, the villages, china town, the sites of midtown/Times Square. The Statue of Liberty (crown tickets sell out fast), for a "drive by" view you can go on the staten island ferry?

The Statue of Liberty Crown is amazing, but tickets need to be bought early, only available from Statue Cruises.
We are glad we went to the 9/11 Memorial Museum although I realise it isn't for everyone. Empire State Building was a highlight for us, great views and such a lovely building inside as well. Central Park is huge, and lovely. We did a bike tour to try and see a lot of it in a short while but found that we ended up whizzing by some things we wanted to see. Maybe a walking tour would be good?

We have all of the above on our forthcoming trip as well as heading over to Dumbo and Brooklyn Heights for the views and walking back over the Brooklyn bridge. Also sunset harbour lights cruise and we will also be visiting the Planetarium for Dark skies. The rest of the time will be wandering around with sore feet and hopefully full tummies.

We go for the first time in October and am still struggling to decide what to prioritise for our 4 days. At the moment tickets to the SOL crown for the Friday followed by a visit to 9/11 site and a Sunday in Central Park planned, probably hire bikes.
Also depends on the weather, as we are there late October I'm not sure what it's going to be like so will have to be prepared to be flexible. We want to go to Hoboken to visit Cake Boss Bakery, walk the Brooklyn Bridge, visit the ESB probably on my birthday. But would also love to visit Greenwich Village for a wander, take in a show, natural history museum, the High Line, Madison Sq gardens, Times Sq, Times Sq etc etc.
