Yes I think he will be reclaiming the kitchen!

as long as there is somewhere they can lie on that is warm and dry they will be fine in a cold room - use a blanket or cat bed. you can get self heating pads so body warmth reflects back to the cat.

mine love digging the carpet if i shut a door
He has a lovely soft furry bed but doesn't use it at all - silly cat! He likes sleeping in the round bit at the top of his little cat tree but we need to get him a new cat tree as he's getting big for it now!

Hubby not keen putting him in the kitchen - and he's the one who didn't want a cat!

We could send you our 15 yr old horror to keep him company. She's up from 2-5 am crying the house down/ cat zoomies & playing with her toys. She can open all the doors so no shutting her in the kitchen etc.
She's well trained ( does exactly what she wants).Nothing stops her.

Do you have a radiator in the kitchen that you could try putting a cat/radiator bed on? My kitchen floor is cold, but the cat loves to sleep on the radiator bed in there, even once the radiators have turned off at night.

The joy of cats lol
Our furry monster wakes me around 5am, if we shut him out of the bedroom he just scratches at the door, try to ignore him and he bounces on us or knocks things off the bedside cupboards.
Attached to our downstairs bathroom we built him an outdoor area which he has access to all the time, he still likes me to get up and give him more fuss and food though.
Im used to it now 😴

Have you tried putting cat nip spray on the scratching posts so he finds them more attractive than the carpet?

Anyway, every morning at 5am he wakes up. He is great at coming to bed with us, grooming and then sleeping solidly until then but when he's up we always have to get up with him to put him in the kitchen because if we don't he just scratches the carpets.

He's not hungry or looking to play (at least not with us) he just scratches carpets and we need to save them so put him downstairs.

He probably needs a bit more play just before bed so have started to do that and he always gets fed later in the evening so I am sure he's not hungry.

We are so tired and need a full night's sleep and the only option now is to start leaving him downstairs, which I feel bad about because he's used to coming to bed and it's cold down there!

He hasn't got the message that scratching the carpet gets him banished as this has been going on for months.

Anyone else ever had this and been able to stop it? We've tried the citrus carpet sprays and spraying his toys with catnip but there's no stopping him!
Cats in theory can sleep from 15 to 20 hours depending on their age
they are also more active at dusk and dawn - their hunting times which is probably why your cat is up and ready to go at 5am
saying that my own little weirdo is more awake at midnight and is fast asleep when i get up at 7am but she is 10 years old and getting lazy
has he been neutered?
can you not let him nap so much in the day?
can he have a cozy basket downstairs? so he sleeps there as his safe space?
i go mine a sisal mat - door mat for the claws, she does like the stairs and i put some of the furniture tape stuff on - hasn't stopped just not as bad she sticks to one spot
good luck

Does he have a cat flap or do you need to let him out?

Ours have a cat flap and one of ours regularly goes out at 5 am. We can set a timer on ours in case you only wanted a cat in or out between certain times.

Our cat flap is always open, but I know friends who have cats that shut them in at night and the cat won’t use the litter box when shut in. So their cats want to go out early morning.

It’s getting a little lighter now in the evenings, could you let him out a bit later so he isn’t in so long?

Belphur pet behaviour spray has always worked well for us if they’ve ever picked at anything.

You said it’s not food related, but a timed feedy bowl often helps if the cat is up before you want to be yourself.

Best cat toys with catnip we’ve ever found are stinkies.

Hope some tips help.

Yes! He likes that but clearly not enough.

Thanks for all your tips. He doesn’t have a cat flap yet. He’s only started going out alone in the last couple of months and we haven’t got round to sorting one out yet but I did suggest to DH today that we get one and allow him out early in the morning - it’s still dark at that time and I am paranoid about him being out in the dark because he’s black.

Double sided sticky tape will sort the carpet scratching. Cats don't like anything sticky under their feet. We always keep our in the kitchen at night. Yesterday morning we discovered a rat behind the fridge which we had to catch and remove and this morning he brought a mouse in to play with. If he had the run of the house so would his little friends!.

My cats are scratchers it drives me mad, I found some blue hormonally attracting stuff that you can pop on to the item you do want them to scratch to retrain away from the carpet/sofa/chair etc this did work for me, also the cardboard flat boxes, with catnip in too.

Our cat has been waking us at four am, just wants food. Unfortunately once you get up once, they then know just how to get you to do it again, our cat would scratch the wicker laundry basket in the morning only, as he knew it would make us jump from bed to stop him. They are not daft!
