Painting a fire surround

Hi

Has anyone ever painted their fire surround?

It's only the surround, there is no fire as it's in the dining room and not required. It is however a proper fireplace with an open chimney ( albeit capped off).

I am wondering what paint you used and whether you were pleased with the results.

It looks like a wooden surround with decorative plaster.

I have heard about Valspar but seen mixed reviews on the finish.

Thanks.

Don’t know if it’s easier to get at the moment but at the start of lock down it was like
Gold dust even on line

My DH has just painted my fire surround with Frenchic Whitey White. We have a local stockist, so it was easy for me to get. He said it's the best paint he's ever used, and has since done my mirror frame and door with it. He's now doing my kitchen steps. He did get some special brushes from Brewers Centre, which were cheaper than the Frenchic ones, but he highly recommends the paint.

We did it with both the fire surrounds in ours. They were in when we moved it, mahogany look.

Used Zinsesser B-I-N paint - that will cover absolutely anything and no bleed through. Then used standard paint over the top of that the same colour as the walls.

'Stone' in the lounge and 'Pebble' in the dining room.

Sorry to jump on this but really enjoying reading all these😁 we need to do something with ours, not sure whether to paint or rip out but then need to replaster. We do use the open fire. I have seen some slate tiles that I could tile over the terracotta ones on the hearth, I only need 2 as they are really big, but what to do about the ones on the wall? I want to paper the chimney breast only in this paper so not sure what colour I would paint it?Also unsure how to cover the edge of the old tiles which will be under the new ones? any suggestions or pictures ?

You could paint the tiles around the fire but you'd need fireproof paint which I think is expensive. How about tiling over them with new tiles? Cement round the edge of the floor tiles.

Frenchic , there are a few forums on FB , many people have painted their fire surrounds with it.

Ive painted bedroom furniture using it and its great, they have some lovely colours to choose from.

Does the Frenchic paint look chalky? Does it require a top coat to seal it?
