When do they allocate the seats pls?

I don't pay, nope. Never had a problem getting seats together.

I've just logged on to my ba booking and surprisingly we have already been allocated seats (together) there's 6 of us, 2 adults and four kids ranging from age 3 to 16. We are flying April from Edinburgh via philadelphia and have our confirmed seats for all four flights

It is luck of the draw with BA.
We have never paid with BA until booking with them for Sept next year. We usually try and go PE with Virgin so you can book your seats in PE at no cost.
For Sept 22 we have our son coming for the first time in 5 years so we want to sit together, so we paid and booked as we are economy on the outward flight. He is fllying home solo after ten days so we booked his seat on the exit and paid ELR as he is tall, and hates the night flights home.
We opted for World Traveller plus on the way back for us two, and also booked the seats. We like the extra luggage and comfort.
The last four times we have flown BA we have had luck twice with a three and no one next to us, booking at OLCI.
The other two flights were to good, one being WTPlus, and we had to sit across the aisle form each other as there was no availability for two together by a window. With BA even in WT plus you have to pay to book, rip off but there it is. Second time in 30 years no window seat for DH and you would have thought someone had died. 🤦🏻
As we used a load of AVIOS up to book the flights, and are PE Virgin for other two trips next year, we didn’t feel it so much paying for seats.
So I guess you have to pay if you feel you need to, and have issues where you sit, and with whom.

We have just booked this morning, and paid £320 extra for 2 x extra leg room seats there and back. Totally worth it for us.
