We have similar issues in Ireland in the last week, heard a radio interview last night stating there is about 20% less buoyancy swimming in fresh water rather than salt water, same interview stated Alcohol is a factor in a certain percentage of drownings.

Such awful news. A man died in our village last month, he got in to trouble in the river, saving his stepdaughter. A lot of the teenagers swim in the very place that this happened, I’ve warned my son that he mustn’t go in the river, tragically this has happened before, many years ago, but on the same stretch of water.

As you say it is often the shock of hitting the water. This was put on to the bbc site last week RNLI shows how to 'float to live' if you fall into water https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-57918218
