University - class of 2021

Back from a weekend in Hull moving DS1 in to Uni Halls. He is settled and met his 4 other flatmate, not all had moved in, should be 8 in the flatshare. They are going out to a freshers party tonight, it starts at 10pm, he has 3 hrs to meet the students and lecturers on his course tomorrow starting 9am...

We stayed o/night in Hull and then took him this morning to do another food shop (he has cornered the market in dried pasta in case there is a shortage!). I held it together until he escorted me away from the Halls and said goodbye. He didn't want me to hug and cry in front of his friends.

I cried all the way home (1.5hrs, DH drove), got home then DS2 did his lateral flow for school tomorrow, came back positive so we went to get a PCR test tonight. DS1 checked with his Uni, he is fine as he is double jabbed and he did his own LFT this morning and was negative. DS now using DS1 bedroom at home as it is bigger.

Have to say that saying goodbye to DS1 was truly heartbreaking.

I know it’s still early days, (some haven’t even gone yet), but for those whose children have gone… how’s it going? How are they doing and how are you doing?

My son loves it! He’s travelling for this year as we only live 15 miles away.
That’s his 2nd day done & dusted, he was into 5pm today & he’s just loving everything about it! Lots on this week for him to attend, & he’s made friends with a few people already. He’s joined a few clubs & societies, he’s doing a music degree so there’s so much to get involved with. I’m just so happy for him as he really seems to be loving it!

My ds is loving it so far ! He gets along with his flat mates they are also making friends with the flat opposite.he’s been busy each day mostly taking himself off to the gym ,the shops or going to events.
He doesn’t want to come home at the weekend because he has stuff planned.it’s early days but I now just feel it’s come at the right time for him he was ready for this! Especially after lockdown.He’s really finding his feet.
I do really miss him and the house is so quiet but knowing he is happy and not homesick makes the world of difference x

We moved DD in last Thursday but she doesn't start her course until the 4th October, all her flatmates are nice and one of them is on her course, she is going to a freshers event tonight.
She has started applying for part time jobs and has been looking round Liverpool and going shopping. It looks like she might be coming home for a few days this weekend as she is hinting at the cost of the train and has said she wants a coupe of things for her room.

Dd20 in Swansea, whole house of 6 has fresher's flu!

2 lateral flow and a PCR each all negative thankfully, but they are all a bit snotty and dosing up on paracetamol and decongestant... and much soup... (and probably cheap vodka... kills most known germs, while stripping paint...)

Generally happy and enjoying themselves, according to Dd the whole of the student cohort seems to have some sort of bug... cold, vomit, diarrhea, tonsillitis, covid... all doing the rounds.

DS is loving life at Hull uni. Has had a mixture of Freshers week plus his course has been holding meetings / getting to know you sessions either online / in lecture theatres / seminar groups. His halls are on campus so everything is there. He did message me today to say he had gone food shopping - words which I never thought I would hear him say as there is a Spa shop on campus. He went to Lidl about 1/2 a mile away and bought wraps and wait for it... salad. OMG! He has messaged me Mon and Tue to tell me what he has done and whats happening. He is doing a Police degree and tomorrow they are going in to the Crime Scene suite to look at a recreation of a crime scene in all its gory detail and his course hasn't even started yet!

What a mad few days we’ve had. Flew over from Ireland last week as DD due to start her midwifery course in University of Bedfordshire. We spent Sunday moving her into her campus accommodation, I then spent Sunday night/Monday morning in A&E (that’s another story!). Just as I’m about to bid her farewell on Monday afternoon she gets an email from the CAO with a second round offer, again midwifery, from National University Ireland Galway. So we now have to pack all her bags again to return home to Ireland! It’s been an exhausting few days and it will be a mad rush to get everything sorted again before she starts next Monday but we’re absolutely delighted to have her closer to home.

Oh wow! And I thought it was difficult enough driving DS to accommodation 4 hours from home! Hope you & your DD manage to get some rest now!
