It's an easy way of subscribing to the thread, they will receive updates to the thread now. You can also do this by clicking on subscribe at the top of the thread. This option isn't always visible though in say mobile view.

I wondered this as I always use the 'subscribe' button above. That was until this morning, when I was using my phone to look at the new three and I realised there isn't a subscribe option on the mobile app (or if there is, I couldn't see it!). I logged into safari and subscribed in the end, but maybe others find it easier to comment to their subscription happens automatically.

The problem with putting "following" is that the actual posts get lost in pages of just one word posts.
Means no one can find actual glitch posts
