Yes I get it, not so much as when I was younger but it’s terrifying I get the pressure on my chest and throat and the feeling of a presence in the room, sometimes a buzzing almost vibrating sensation.
Very frightening.

Yep I get it usually if I sleep on my back - it’s that horrible ‘awake but not awake’ feeling

It's horrible, ive had it quite a few times, I went though a stage of it happening most nights for about a month or so, I was scared of going to bed & falling asleep which made it worse, it's only happened when I'm falling asleep

Now you all mention it - I was sleeping on my back and I usually sleep on my side! Definitely suffering with lack of sleep at the minute too so that’s probably contributed!

It’s terrifying but I have learnt a great deal from doing a bit of research ..
Basically it happens when parts of rapid eye movement sleep occur while you're awake(trying to go to sleep or just waking up) .
Usually R.E.M. is when you’re asleep obviously and it stops your body moving or acting out your dreams to protect yourself which is why your brain is awake during these episodes but you can’t move.. but lack of sleep can trigger it .
Apparently it happens to most people at some point .
Can also be brought on by jet lag and sleeping on your back.
I’ve found I can snap myself out of it by concentrating on moving just one finger . Works every time now
Ooh I’ll try the focus on one finger if it ever happens again - thank you!

It happened to me in my late teens. I "woke up" to feel something pulling the quilt down off me from the foot of the bed. I lifted my head up and looked at my arms as they wouldn't move. I shook my head and decided this is a dream and I'm not awake so I should go back asleep and everything will be fine. I did and it was.
I had read an article something like this a few years before it happened

Yes, I've had it a few times and it really freaked me out the first time - I thought by BF's flat was haunted!
It's also known as 'Old Hag Syndrome' thoughtco/the-old-hag-syndrome-2594415
I can now tell when it's happening so it's not as scary and I do the thing of trying to make my finger move too. As soon as there's movement you snap straight out of it.
