P&O cruise May half term
I am hoping someone can help with ideas! There are two formal nights on our 7 night cruise and I am stumped as to what an 11yo boy should wear. “Smart Casual” is acceptable according to the website but not jeans, even dark coloured ones. The only dark coloured pants our DGS has are black school pants and that’s no good. I suppose I will have to visit Primark? They will only be worn twice!
Also, what are Smart Casual shirts/tops? Shoes - I suppose black laced school shoes will have to do! Long sigh. |

Hi Jan, we cruised with our nephew when he was 13 with P&O. He wore chinos and a shirt with smart shoes to dinner but for our formal nights he wore a DJ and loved it! However smart casual is fine for children and and a polo shirt / cotton shirt and smart trousers would be perfectly acceptable.

Thank you Claire. On cruisecritic Black school trousers and white school shirt with a dicky bow. At first I was surprised that a boy would wear “school uniform” but then I thought that men wear business suits during the working week, so not a lot different really. I think DGS may look snazzy in a a longish (a bit longer than waist length) burgundy or jade waistcoat with matching bow tie.

He chose a black one. He will look like a snooker player!

We are on the same cruise
We have been P&O before and what you have suggested for the formal nights will be fine. Can't wait!

I’m just back from a P&O cruise and my DS wore a navy suit from Asda. He absolutely loved it and got loads of compliments from passengers and staff!

Smart casual is the dress code for most nights in the dining room, the two formal evenings are shirt, tie and suit or tux. When our son was younger we bought black school trousers and a black school jacket from M&S which he wore as a suit with a white shirt and tie. Smart casual dress he wore chinos and a short sleeve shirt for dinner.

What is ‘smart casual ‘ for women? I don’t like to wear dresses so are cropped trousers and a smart top acceptable?

For me, cropped trousers would be a bit too casual. But full length and a smart top, may be dolled up with a necklace etc, is what I wear.
