Why did I not think of this before ?

After reading a thread on here, someone mentioned about getting the train to the airport.
Then a brainwave hit me !
We live near Chesterfield but are flying from Gatwick at the end of June, so it's a 5 hour drive if no traffic or stops (highly unlikely ).
DH is finding it increasingly difficult to drive long distances now (must be an age thing, plus DH's arthritis issues ) so I've had a look at train tickets. We'd still travel down the day before we fly and stay in a Premier Inn or maybe even a hotel at the airport itself, but that was the plan anyway.
So for 4 of us it'll be around £300 (obviously too early for correct pricing) and it only takes around 3 hours with 1 change at St Pancras
So we can sit in comfort and it's a much shorter journey, and not much difference in cost when you factor in just over 3 weeks of airport parking, fuel and a day room for our return.
This certainly makes the journey less daunting and I can't believe I've never thought of this before, doh

That makes perfect sense to me! Our dynamics will change after next Easter and from then on, it will be two of us.

The train will then make good sense to us when getting from Falmouth Cornwall to invariably, Heathrow. It takes roughly the same time, comes in cheaper and we are in any case committed to a night in a Hotel. The lack of stressful driving is a bonus.

Agree with duchy, see if you can get a railcard. The cost of one was easily offset by a single train fare (Edinburgh to London in my case) the last time I did a long journey.

I always get the train (or NX bus for Heathrow) to the airport. So convenient.

Yes, for us, the trip round the M25 is the stuff of nightmares so a stress free journey is definitely the way to go.

We live in Nottingham and have done this the last couple of trips.

We book the train tickets as soon as released (think it’s about 12 weeks before). On the way there it’s easy as you know what time you are going and if it’s tea time ish, the trains are generally reasonably priced. On the way back I book the first train with a cheaper price which is usually about 10am ish. You can get any train from Gatwick to St Pancras so we jump on a train then get some breakfast at St Pancras. Can be a bit of hanging about and depending when you travel, it can be cold but worth it for the savings.

😁

Yep - we are letting the train take the strain to London. Then tube and train to LHR with a stay overnight at a PI
