Hi it’s quite simple really. All you need to do is lean it against the centre of the wall in your photo at an angle say 60/65 degrees . Perfectly safe , the bottom of the ladder can’t move as you will have it against a stair

Thank you so much for helping! I think the wall maybe too far away for it to be safe, unfortunately. You can’t really see in the photo but it’s quite high!

Ok I’ve gone to try and imagine how it works and I see what you mean. Not sure I’m going to persuade DH on the ladder though.

Thank you again!

Ours looks exactly like yours - we used the ladder on the stairs as described and one person also holding onto the ladder - did it once 14 years ago - now it’s time to redecorate we are getting a guy in to do the painting in the hallway/landing. Sorry once was enough for me.

This is what most people mean, and it's the way I've done it, but if you have the money just buy a decent extendable ladder. You can get some great collapsing ones that go down to hardly anything nowadays, like this:

Thank you Stan the man

Kind of wishing I’d got someone in now! 😂

I’ll share a picture when it’s done and hoping to distract with a big captain America picture on the bit at the top to draw eyes away from dodgy edging 😂

It's easy to get someone in but more satisfying doing it yourself I reckon. The hardest bit I found was edging the ceiling with frogtape, especially when standing on a plank that's about 4" wide

Why buy a ladder if you are not going to use it again. Use a T piece instead, made from 4x2. lean it against the wall just as you would the ladder. Then a plank across from the landing. Working on sites you see it all.
