When/why did they stop saying "th" "st" etc in adverts?

The typing of th and st in dates stopped many years ago, the theory being that the less characters a typist had to type the faster that person could type.

I don’t like missing out the th or rd etc either. I don’t like letters that aren’t justified though. It seems to be informal if it’s not justified, which is why charity letters etc often do it and try to be less formal. But if I received a professional letter I’d expect it to look professional. If it was just a quote or something I wouldn’t assume that they’d be lacking in attention if they did it, but I’d assume that they didn’t have an admin team and that they were maybe just writing up their letters on a night after a day working.

I like justified text, it is what you have in a book or newspaper. Occasionally the spacing can go a bit beserk but it is usually easy to fix.

I remember in my last job I wrote a board report and gave it to my line manager to review. There was one paragraph which my normal formatting was off so it had a ragged right margin. My boss sent it back to me wit various comments but a line by this paragraph with the comment “justify”. I completely misunderstood and went to see him with an explanation as to why I included the paragraph on higher revenue levels (or whatever it was).

Im a med sec, still use th, rd and st and i justify paragraphs to make it look nice and tidy. Only me and one other sec do this in our dept of 8 secs. Dont even start on the other grammer!

In the public sector we now have to ensure that we comply with accessibility standards, making it easier for all readers to read documents. In my organisation we now don’t allow justified text as it apparently makes it harder for those with dyslexia to read documents

I learnt to type on a typewriter back in the early 80s and prefer ragged right in correspondence, but having spent years in a graphic department producing course handouts and brochures justified was used a lot. I also like th and rd after dates etc. The other one I have a battle with my kids over is the double space after a full stop! It is a habit that I can't break, the double space just happens automatically after 30 odd years of typing! It drives my son mad!

I’ve worked at a couple of different places where we have a ‘house style’ for writing as part of our brand guidelines. It’s just a way of making anything we publish externally feel consistent to the reader. Quite often we’ll disagree internally about whether something should be pleural, hyphenated or needs a comma etc. But, it’s just different to how we were each taught to write at school.

*starting sentences with but, so, or and is currently acceptable Plain English but feels very strange to me! I’m trying to embrace it as shorter sentences are apparently easier to digest when reading on tablets or smart phones.
