We have done it both ways (different holidays, many years apart). The tour option was better when we were short of time and had our son with us. The guide told stories which made it more interesting for him than just following the red trail and reading from a guide book.

We did the Walk into History your and it was fantastic. All the history was explained and put into context, really interesting and we had a very funny guide.
All the guides are experts who play a character from history. thefreedomtrail/ |

We picked up the map and walked it, with numerous stops along the way. You can also rent bikes, which would make it quicker.

We did a free tours by foot.
We've done them in a few cities now and they've always been excellent. You do have to make a booking but then just pay at the end what you think the tour was worth. freetoursbyfoot/the-freedom-trail/ |
