Virgin/Delta Flights, hand baggage restrictions?

We normally fly to Orlando with United via Newark, but I've left it a bit late to book for our August trip this year (somewhat busy with a house move!) and I can currently get a lot better price with Virgin/Delta via Atlanta.

The cheaper booking would be with Delta, who offer the same hand baggage rules as United - one decent sized carry-on, plus a 'personal' item such as laptop or camera bag, neither of which have any real weight restrictions apart from you must be able to stow it overhead yourself (United seem to allow you to bring the kitchen sink!) and we always end up needing that extra allowance, especially with the camera and computer kit that I carry.

However as the transatlantic leg would be with Virgin, how do the carry-on rules compare? Would we get the more generous Delta limits as it's a Delta booking, or do Virgin's rather more limited rules apply to the codeshare portion? I suspect Virgin will override Delta.

I would love to try Aer Lingus via Dublin one year, but their local hop carrier from the UK to Dublin is more restrictive than Ryan Air!

Hand luggage allowances are always those of the operating carrier for each flight (eg Delta aircraft means Delta allowance, Virgin aircraft means Virgin allowance), it doesn’t matter who sold you the ticket.

The rules for checked baggage work differently.
