The FCO advice is just that - advice - and technically doesn't stop you from flying. It would just invalidate your insurance if you chose to fly and you could claim on your insurance if you choose to cancel. Although I think airlines would decide not to fly non-essential aircraft if the advice is still in place. Similarly the current government requirement to self-isolate for 14 days on your return doesn't technically stop you from going.

BTW, United Airlines website says that customers can "make changes to, or cancel, any travel they have booked through the end of the year without fees":

hub.united/united-how-ch...645469782.html

(although I get the impression their definition of "cancel" is "receive credit for a future flight")
Yes if I was a direct booking I could change they have told me that. I am however a travel republic customer and as it’s ticketed I cannot change! Go figure! I think going forward I will book directly with the airline.

You’re right we can get a credit note but I would rather have a refund. We got a brilliant deal on the flights which I doubt we’d get again. Also we can’t rebook for next year so may not be able to use the credit note at all 🙈

We are supposed to fly with Virgin Holidays on 1st August (to LA). Obviously this is not happening. After managing to contact via whassap got a quote which was a lot more for the same holiday next August. When I enquired about an incentive to re-book I was told that the new price included an incentive of £178 (a lie as the new quote was only £50 less than the website quote).

I was also told that if I cancelled now, we would loose 70% so I have told them that we will wait until they themselves cancel us, which they will do as we are supposed to travel within 3 weeks and we cannot get into the country therefore they cannot accommodate us in our hotel etc. etc. and at that point they will have to process a full refund.

Hell will freeze over before I book another holiday with Virgin Holidays
