EU travel requirements after Brexit
I was having a dig around the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website last night and came across something I did not know! After 31st December British passports have to have at least 6 months left till expiry date to travel to EU countries (except for travel between UK and Ireland) just thought I’d highlight it on here as I did not know!
I’m not sure if this is still the case if there’s a deal but that’s the current situation |

It's actually worse than that...
If you took advantage of renewing your last passport early and getting the remaining months added to this one, they are no longer valid. You need to check when your passport was issued, add ten years and then deduct the sixth months of validity required. It has caught me out as I had 8 months carried over on my passport, so technically my passport becomes useless for EU travel in March 2021 rather than May 2022 as it says on the passport This validity calculator on the GOV.UK website is helpful passport.service.gov.uk/check-a-passport |

There isn't. It used to be you could apply for your passport 9 months before the expiry of the previous one. They automatically added those 9 months to the end date meaning it would be 10 years after the end date of the previous passport.
They are actively emailing people but I have no doubt that people will be caught out and get refused travel. |

Just to note if you renew passports now they no longer as the extra months. Just those renewed before September 2018...
It is annoying and the calculator is helpful |

There will be more information coming out shortly. I work in the Insurance Industry and we have regular Brexit and Covid briefings from the Government.
Look out for the return of Green cards, pet passports, a reduction in duty free allowance (!), and no European Health cards |

This was in the news but admittedly around a year ago when the implications of Brexit & travel to the EU were being discussed.
It goes something like this: all visitors to EU countries are required to have at least 6 months left on their passport so you can only travel into EU countries if your passport was issued 9 years 6 months ago or less. However, where someone had renewed their UK passport before their previous had run out & had the unexpired months added on (max of 9 months), their passport could still be in date but have been issued up to 10 years 2 months before. As a member of the EU, the requirement to have 6 months left on your passport & for it to have been issued no further back than 9 years 6 months in order to travel within the EU was waived. This concession ceases on 31st December with Brexit. My passport was issued in April 2011 but had an expiry date of Jan 2022. It was therefore valid for me to travel to the US up to the end of December 2021 but invalid for me to travel to the EU after December 2020. I renewed it 2 weeks ago by post; got a text today to say my new passport is in the post. 2 days after sending my application, I had a text alerting me that my current passport was no longer valid for EU travel after 31st December 2020. Please also bear in mind that this is likely to come as a surprise to a number of people I think. So if you hope to travel to Europe post Jan 1st it's worth checking and doing earlier than you would normally do I think.
The online renewal system is very quick, but I guess there may be some capacity and potential turn around issues closer to the time if there is a sudden surge in demand. Some people are ignoring the texts and emails because they think it is some type of scam. I've ignored my daughter's reminder because I keep forgetting. But must actively do it this week. ( I keep saying that !). Children's passports according to the calculator must be no older than 4 years 6 months old when you enter the Europe. Edited at 11:35 PM. |

I got a Government text a couple of weeks ago suggesting I renew. Just checked after reading this thread as I’d wondered why I got the text and it turns out my passport runs out 7th December (my passport says July!)
It’s clever that they know these things and have given me the heads up. I’ll renew online next week. 👍🏻 Kat

In normal circumstances I would also say don't forget to update ESTAS too, but not so much of a rush perhaps in the current circumstances unless you have something booked and fingers crossed.
