RMNs working in prisons
Hi, I'm hoping that there might be any RMNs (registered mental nurse) who work in the prison system? I'm an RMN and I've always worked in care homes, nursing and dementia. The thing is that's all I know. I have a former colleague who is also an RMN and works in a prison. There is a vacancy at the prison and she thinks I should apply. I'm going to look around on Sunday to get a feel for the place. I'd like to give it a go but I'm concerned that with no experience, I'd be vulnerable. But I really want a change.
Is there anyone in here that could offer some advice please? Thanks

It is a very different environment for many reasons, some very obvious like hearing the gates clang shut behind you!

Not an RMN, and never worked permanently in a prison...
But have done bank shifts in the prison hospital many many moons ago. It's utterly different to ANYTHING I've ever done before. You have to change your mindset. Prisoners can be extremely manipulative and think of things way differently to whatever your logical thought processes might be! I'd have a long chat to your friend who works there, and have a Frank discussion about what she deals with on a daily basis. I think it could be extremely rewarding, but is definitely very different. |

When you visit have a long chat with somebody other than your friend about the downside of the job and the frustrations that they have to deal with on a daily basis. Prison work is not for everybody so keep that in mind while you research the job.
