Car seat, rules? Updated

What is the rules regarding children’s car seats? If the child is a small 5 year old and a 6 year old, can you give them a lift without a car seat? Or is the driver liable?
Thanks 😊

This might be useful. Doesn’t seem to be a straightforward answer as it seems to depend on the height of the child

I had looked at that, they are definitely under the height and weight so need a booster seat.
They are not my children and I don’t have spare booster seats so I don’t want to brake the law by taking them in my car if they require seats. But as its a lift do they not need one?
Its not very clear 🙈🙈🙈

As you seem to be planning it wouldn’t fall under ‘unexpected journey’ nor are you a taxi so under the rules the child should be in a car seat unless your car can not fit one in (again, unlikely).

I am a worrier and a softie 🙈
I have been told rather than asked that I am collecting a neighbours two children from school (my son’s school) on Tuesday and some other days 😬
I don’t mind helping anyone but I don’t want to bake any laws or put any child at risk.
I have tried to explain Mason’s health is unpredictable therefore his attendance is not reliable but there is a language barrier and he has already told school that I am going to be getting his children, before he told me 🙈

I’m sorry but I wouldn’t put up with that! Help out occasionally yes, but not be told like that. You have enough to deal with.

Tell them no, you don't have the car seats for them and you are not going to break the law and tell the school too

I definitely wouldn’t take any children that age in my car without the required car seat. You would never forgive yourself if anything happened.

Why have you been told? I think the odd occasion is fine but what happens if you need to nip into town or to the dentist or wherever? You are unable to do so because you have other people’s kids. I’d just go back to them and explain that due to the children requiring car seats, you would be unable to do it. 👍🏻

the mumsnet response... "that does not work for me", followed by "I hope you can sort something out".

( Do not apologise when your agreement was neither sought nor negotiated. Bluntness is key with cheeky beggars)
