Only been once so can't be considered an expert but you could try the glass bottomed boat at John Pennekamp Coral State Park on Key Largo. Also you must experience sunset at Mallory Square on Key West.
The 7 mile bridge is quite an experience as well Mick

Some really good suggestions (as always) from Mick. Just be aware (and this may sound obvious) but if you are prone to sea sickness the glass bottomed boats are not such a good idea because when they more them up over coral the movement can set you off.
Def agree with the 7 mile bridge...amazing |

We had 8 days for Miami, the Keys and the Everglades but are thinking of spending 2 weeks in a few years on a similar trip as there is so much to do.
I posted an account of our day in Miami in this thread: http://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=951398 which takes us up to the point where we set off to the Keys from Miami. We allowed most of the day for the drive down to the mid-Keys, taking in Coral Castle (a bizarre sculpture garden which is a memorial to unrequited love), Robert Is Here fruit stand (delicious milkshakes and smoothies in addition to all the fresh fruit) and feeding the huge tarpon at Robbie's Marina in Islamorada where we also enjoyed a delicious meal before driving the last 45 mins or so to our accommodation in Marathon. We headed back to Islamorada (and Robbie's Marina for lunch) the following day for a boat trip which included snorkelling and fun playing with the kids on a sandbar in the ocean, and another day had a great time John Pennekamp State Park on the beach right next to the 7 mile bridge and strolling the short nature trails. We had planned to go kayaking while at the park but it was too blowy, but fortunately there were kayaks to use at the Seascape Motel and Marina where we were staying, so we took these out another day. For our day in Key West , we did a dolphin safari in the morning before lunch at Garbo's Grill and the Conch train tour in the afternoon. We opted not to stay for the sunset celebration because we thought our children needed an early night and instead stopped off on the way back at Square Grouper in Cudjoe Key for dinner, but would definitely consider the sunset celebration another time - in fact some friends were there the week before with similarly-aged children (5-10 yrs old) and they apparently had a lovely time. We were very sorry not to have made it to the Turtle Hospital or Sombrero Beach, especially because they were so close to where we were staying, so have earmarked these for a future trip. After 4 nights in Marathon we headed back up the Overseas Highway to join the Tamiami Trail to the Everglades. I recently posted about our time there here: http://www.thedibb.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=949657 Our trip to Shark Valley was en route to Everglades City and then the following day we went kayaking/on a poleboat tour before an airboat trip in the afternoon. |
