Applying for first adult passport

My sons passport runs out in January. I'm wondering if i should replace it now or let it lapse as he turns 16 in May. As we have no plans to travel before then my thought is he can apply for a new one in April (3 weeks before he turns 16) and then it will last for 10 years instead of 5.

What do people think.

It really depends if you decide to have a last minute break and your son has no passport which will need to be valid for 6 months in Europe. Our daughter turns 16 in March and I am thinking the same. I would prefer her to have a full 10 year adult passport. Considering it will be exam time ( well should be anyway !) we are highly unlikely to be going away. You wouldn’t be able to apply for an ESTA either if needed.

I can't see any travel until July at the earliest. Just wondering if there is any downside as is replacing the child one easier as its a replacement not a new one?

It’s a replacement either way.

It doesn’t make any difference in application but I’d hang out for the 10 year one if you don’t have any plans and to be honest I can’t see there being any travel before April anyway.

I'd wait if you don't believe he will need one in-between. May as well get the best term for your money.
