It's doesn't seem entirely consistent.
That would apply to most banned substances though, officially banned but some people still bring them back 😀

Yes. Just because some people brought them back with them doesn't mean they aren't banned.

I'll put my Coke (!) bottles in my hand luggage and if they want proof they are not hand grenades I will open them and drink them - ooh are they under 100ml? Hadn't thought about that one!
After tomorrow I think they are gonna have to issue some sort of info/instruction about them as I recon they are gonna be quite a few bought back.

This may be totally dumb but here goes... and on the basis that they are collectors items never to be drunk in anger

Could you drink the contents by removing the top carefully, bring back in hand luggage and replace the lid when you get home?

I brought them back empty. I would never trust the baggage handlers with all that liquid in them

I assume they can hold more than 100ml of liquid? If so, then they would certainly be banned if they were still full and therefore it was a good job you brought them back empty.

Liquids larger than 100ml are fine in hold/checked luggage. But I wouldn't want them bursting over my clothes. That is why I packed them empty.
