Candor's Leaf Peeping Tour 2008 - Day 9
Day 9 - From 16th Century Plymouth to 21st Century Boston
We awoke on day 9 in possibly the biggest bed I've ever slept in. I reckon you could have got 4 adults in there. It was massive. Unfortunately I didn't think to take a photo. After another lovely breakfast we repacked our suitcases. We were off to Boston later and would be taking our car back to the rental place. Our first stop would be downtown Plymouth to see some more history. We parked the car along the front and walked towards Plymouth Rock. This is believed to be the landing place of the Pilgrims. I was a bit disappointed with the size of the rock and then I realised that 2/3rds of it was underground. You can actually see a crack on it from when it was dropped once when they moved it from the sea front. It now sits there permanently. THe canopy over the rock Plymouth Rock We walked round the prom to the Mayflower II. This is a recreation of the original Mayflower ship that the Pilgrims came to the US in. The first thing that strikes you is how small it is. It was hard to imagine over 100 people plus crew on there. Must have been horrible. The Mayflower II Like the Plimoth Plantation they had people there in character. We met a couple of people playing the parts of people on the ship. Any questions you asked they had to answer as if it was the 1620s which was very interesting. They were very good at it. Must have taken a lot of practice. One of the "sailors" From there we walked into the town centre and got a coffee before wandering around the main street. It was complete with a British Shop with many overpriced items such as Robinsons squash and Cadbury's chocolate. We walked to the town square - this contained the 1749 courthouse which is the oldest Wooden courthouse in America. Downstairs is a museum but they've recreated what the courthouse would have looked like upstairs. The 1749 Courthouse Inside of the courthouse Also on the square are the first Parish Church, the Church of the Pilgrimage and the Burial Hill where the first Pilgrims were buried. The oldest ones we saw were from 1740. First Parish Church Church of the Pilgrimage Burial Hill Leading down from the church was Leyden Street (shown below) This was the first settled street in American an in 1627 would have looked something like the Plimoth Plantation. |

We were now hungry so had lunch in D'Angelo's grilled sandwiches - I highly recommend the thanksgiving one - before getting on the road to Boston. The journey into Boston took around an hour. We weren't going to our hotel as we had to drop the hire car off. I'd read in all the books not to consider driving in Boston unless you had to so we decided to drop the car off. The car rental people dropped us off at the airport T-stop. The "T" is Boston's subway. It's a bit antiquated in parts but its ok. THe problem we had was on the line we went on had trams as the subway cars meaning you had to go up steps to get on.
The Green line trains on the T Normally this would be no problems but with 2 suitcases and hand luggage it was a bit more difficult. Plus when we got to Copley station they were renovating so there were no escalators or lifts so we had to climb stairs there too! We then walked the 2 blocks to our accomodation. THis was another hotel i had read mixed reviews of. Boston is really expensive for hotels (apparently it's more expensive than New York) and this was one that we could afford close to the City Centre. It was lovely. The room was a little small but as a base and a bed for exploring the city it was great and also nice and clean. View from our hotel room A short rest was had in the room before we went to explore our neighbourhood - back bay. Across the road from the hotel was the John Hancock tower which is 70 stories high. Apparently it's tiny compared to NYC but coming from Cardiff it was massive. The John Hancock Tower Also around the corner was Copley square but unfortunately this was being re-turfed so much of it was fenced off. Back Bay was designed on Paris - the main street (Commonwealth Avenue) even has trees lining the middle of it. Copley Square (Trinity Church & JH Tower) Commonwealth Avenue From there we checked out where the Cheesecake factory was. I'd found this on the internet (not sure if we're allowed to post links, but make sure you google it if you don't know what it is) and it sounded amazing and there was one a 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Once we'd found where it was we went to the Prudential towe. THis offered superb views off Boston from its 50th floor sky lab. We spent over an hour up there. They give you a radio that you enter a number into and it gives you commentary of the area you can see. It cost $11 each but even so it was well worth it. Pics from floor 50 of the Prudential Tower After that we had our fill in the Cheesecake factory and wandered back to the hotel. Tomorrow would be a busy day as we walked the Freedom Trail. |

Lovely photos, the Mayflower does look small - bet they were all 'friends' by the time they arrived in America !
