Have always hired through Alamo and have never used a credit card - they have never put a hold on debit card either except for the a tiny amount to check it works I guess . Once we were at the desk and the couple next to us we’re leaving a cash deposit of around $200. We are going through Avis this time so think I may need a credit card for them not entirely sure .

This thread has baffled me totally. What's it all about please?
We know a credit and a debit card are fine. Simple.

I've never owned a credit card and never had a problem with a debit card. Some companies require a hold (anything from 1-2K)

I agree with you and I wasn't being sarcastic or having a go at people.
What I am saying if you check on page 1 is two posts are baffling me. Not that everybody knows it's just the fact that two aren't totally correct. Hey ho.

Alamo accepts debit cards. Some of the other companies do not. Also the deposit can vary from company to company and from location to location.
I recently had an Enterprise rental for 2 days. They took a hold of almost $500. ($cost of rental plus $300.) on my credit card. If you are uncertain, talk to the location you are renting from. Airport locations tend to be a little more liberal. I have an Enterprise down the street from my office but would rather drive a half hour to Alamo at the airport because I know I can use a debit card and their hold is reasonable. Also Alamo release the hold as soon as you return the car. other companies can take several days up to a week. |

Sorry, wrong end of the stick, didn't read the 2 posts, but have now. My apologies. Having got rid of our Credit Cards the other year, totally forgot about the car hire, asked on here and got the answer I needed. I did end up getting another CC though as the Encore Vegas wanted $700 cash if no CC and wouldn't accept a debit card. |

Not an issue. Isn't it a strange World we live in now. No credit card and you get looked at as if you have 2 heads by some businesses!

Yeah Alamo said it wasn't a problem with a debit card and would deduct $1.00. The Encore just didn't want to know, no credit card then $100 a night hold, so $700. So ended up with another credit card with a couple of days to spare before we set off. Suppose it's good to have but was looking to get rid. |

You can use some prepaid cards for car hire, its actually down to the card company not the car company. Its the same as some bank cards can be used in petrol pumps and others cannot even if issued by the same bank.
This is why companies make a small charge, whuch may even be £0, against your card first.. it either gets accepted or rejected. They have no idea how much credit etc you have when you present the card, they just want to know if the card is valid. We have used credit, Debit and prepaid cards, even cash over the years. |
