Stilton cheese
Not sure where to post this, apols if it has to be moved.
I like to buy my brother some Stilton and port at Christmas. Looking at the Stilton in Marks and Spencer’s today, the ‘use by’ date is 2/1/19. I know my brother won’t eat it all by then and it would be wasted. It’s not a big chunk, but he lives alone. I’m surprised at this short shelf-life, is it normal for Stilton ? Hard cheese keeps fresh for more than a couple of weeks in my fridge, and Parmesan keeps longer than that. |

Stilton should last at least 3 weeks if it is stored correctly normally past the sell by date. He could also cut it down and freeze a few portions

It's always a problem this time of year. The dates seem shorter than normal.
Mmmm, Stilton.we had to give it up when we found out we were using it on everything including baked beans Plus the weight was piling on.

go and buy a chunk of Stilton cut from a wheel at a local deli and it wont have a use by date on it and common sense can prevail, when it starts to go mouldy throw it out, no wait that wont work with Stilton i will have to rethink that one
I have a nice wax covered block of thirty month cave aged cheddar in the fridge and it has a use by date of early January and it says once open consume within 5 days, how does that work it is two and a half years old when i buy it and as soon as i put it in my fridge it became a ticking time bomb that has to be eaten in 5 days Edited at 11:59 PM. |

Stilton is aged/matured for 8-12 weeks before it is sold and then you normally get 3-4 weeks shelf life but as you could probably tell i am were sceptical of ludicrous best before dates and short use by dates
as i said if you buy from a good local deli then it will be in a plain wrapper with no use by dates, with Stilton when it goes off the blue mould starts to go green and the cheese starts to go yellow and it will start to release liquid and would taste acidic if you ate it I love a good port and a chunk of Stilton at Christmas, this years port is a 20 year old vintage and the Stilton will be bought this weekend |

I much prefer Blacksticks cheese in recent years and that's saying something as I love stilton.
