You might find they have a 'fast train' and a slow train. You need to get on the one with fewer stops within the hour if changing at bedford or st pancras. The gatwick express only goes from Victoria so maybe a wrong name. The slow trains are a pain as you mention and to be avoided.

James - my apologies if you know the following, don't mean to give you eggs to suck I used VIRGIN TRAINS for fare info, you may be able to collect FC miles too. No booking/cc fee with Virgin Trains. You can opt for ticket collection at Nottingham station desk/machines for all journeys (purchase cc/dc for collection proof).

St Pancras to LGW, non change, 52 min, flexible ticket, no time restrictions, £10.70 adult fare (£5.35 for bairns up to age 15). When timing your journey avoid the 1 hour 9 mins/one change trains.

Thanks everyone. I've had a look at the different suggestions, and it looks like we will have to go to St Pancras and then change for Gatwick.

I looked at both Bedford and Reading, but it would mean changing first at Derby. This would make 2 changes.

I'll keep looking.
Thanks Chris for the price check. That's really helpful.
James

Hi James, your easier option would still be Nottingham to St Pancras, then jump on the inbound train from Bedford onto LGW. We've done this once, Durham to Kings Cross, walked over the road into St Pancras and boarded the train to LGW. I booked tickets separately as the St Pancras to LGW was an 'anytime' ticket.

This is what we did last year from Newcastle and it was really easy, even with 3 cases, 2 kids and a wheelchair. We also booked the tickets separately and it was much cheaper this way.

Changing at St Pancras is very easy - I did it twice last month. As you exit the platform take the escalator down to the next level, turn back on yourself and follow the signs for Thameslink. Take an escalator down one more level to Platform A. There are lifts instead of escalators in each case. The trains for Gatwick Airport are those going to either Brighton or Three Bridges. The journey time is around 1 hour.

Hi. Thanks for the help. I don't really mind going through St. Pancras, its Andrea thats not too keen on it.
I'm sure it will be fine.
Thanks
James

Hi John.
We only ever went through St. Pancras once in 2016. We usually fly from Manchester. But the prices from there were so much more than Gatwick.

I may be getting confused (Very easy for me) but is there an express and a slow train from St. Pancras to Gatwick, or are they just the same?
James

The Brighton train is faster than the Three Bridges one as it doesn't stop at quite so many stations. But there is only about 10 or 15 mins difference. I get on whichever comes first.

And by the way, there are luggage racks at the end of each carriage in these trains.
